What are gully gratings?

Gully gratings, often called gully grids, sit atop of yard or road gullies to prevent large debris (as well as animals and people) from entering the drainage system - their purpose is to collect rainwater from the sides of estate roads and highways to prevent localised flooding.

Class or Group?

Gully gratings are covered by the BS EN 124 standard which explains the differences in class (A15 - F900) and group (1 - 6). This standard replaced BS 497 in 1994.

Class denotes the static load of a grating; for example, a C250 grating can withstand a 250kN (25 tonne) static test load. But in areas of slow and fast moving heavy traffic, such as highways, the dynamic load of a vehicle breaking and/or turning could be 3 to 4 times its static load weight. In BS EN 124 groups help classify which gratings can be used in different areas that carefully considers dynamic load - and not just static load.

Choosing the right grating

It's best to over specify the weight loading or group to be on the safe side, as damaged gratings can be costly and dangerous.

As a guide: if you're installing a gully grate in a yard consider a C250 or D400 grating. For kerbside in estate roads and highways consider group 3 gratings. For the centre of highways and carriageways consider group 4 gratings. For heavier applications, such as warehouse or distribution hubs, dockyards and airports, contact us for advice.
